Zooey Deschanel is cooking up a storm during quarantine, like mostly everybody stuck at home.
Since the best way to combat colds and viruses is by having a strong immunity system through a healthy diet, the 40-year-old actress is sharing her healthy “Kale and Basil Pesto” recipe with JustJared.com readers.
“[My pesto is] great with pasta of course,” Zooey shared with us. “But also lovely as a dip for crudités, a salad dressing, or drizzled on roasted vegetables.”

Zooey Deschanel’s “Kale and Basil Pesto” Recipe
1 bunch of ripe kale
1 cup of basil leaves washed and trimmed
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 tbsp walnuts
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup grated vegan Parmesan (I like Follow your Heart) or grated regular Parmesan
– Quickly cook the kale in boiling salted water for 30 seconds and quickly retrieve with tongs. This will soften it enough to blend. Rinse with cold water so it’s cool to the touch. Squeeze out the excess water with a dish cloth.
– Place the softened kale, basil, olive oil, salt, lemon juice and walnuts in the bowl of a food processor or blender jar. Blend until it’s the consistency you like. I like it quite smooth but everyone is different. Once it’s done, add your vegan or regular cheese and pulse one time so it’s mixed but not blended.
