Schools in New York City will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year, Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced.
“It will help us to save lives,” de Blasio said. “It’s the right decision,” he said.
It has been several weeks since schools were shut down due to the ongoing health crisis and teachers have been doing lessons via remote learning and parents have been acting as home school instructors.
There are dozens of states that have announced school closures for the rest of the year, though New York City is the epicenter of the virus outbreak so this is a significant development. The NYC public school system is also the largest in the country, according to the New York Times.
It is being reported that the city likely will not reopen until September.
