Nadia, the Amur tiger at the Bronx Zoo, made national headlines after she tested positive for coronavirus.
Now, her sister Azul, Josie and Alden (who starred in The Zoo‘s latest episode on Animal Planet), and three African lions have also tested positive.
“Samples for testing from the tiger, Nadia, were collected from her nose, throat, and respiratory tract while she was under anesthesia,” WCS shared in a release on Wednesday, April 22. “Subsequently, we can confirm that the three other tigers in Tiger Mountain and the three African lions that exhibited a cough have also tested positive for COVID-19.”
The Zoo also reminded everyone that these coronavirus tests were done “in veterinary laboratories and resources used did not take from those being used for human testing.”
The Big Cats were infected by a worker who was asymptomatic at the time they were caring for the animals.
Paul Calle, the facility’s chief veterinarian, shared a recent update, revealing that “none of them were seriously ill and all of them are showing daily, progressive signs of improvement.”
He added, “We expect full recoveries for all of them.”
